Why You Haven’t Got What You Want Yet

And what to do about it

Eight steps that are simple to explain, but not always easy to execute

If there is an outcome that you want but you haven’t achieved yet, then the following process might explain why you haven’t achieved it, where you are falling down and what to do differently.

I’ve used the example of losing weight as this is a situation where you can effectively influence your own outcome. Note that if you have a different desired outcome in mind it may rely on other people and this can complicate the situation slightly. For example, if you want to be a best-selling author, then other people will need to buy your book. Even if you are the most talented and skilled writer and these people would enjoy your book, you still cannot make them buy it. Their behaviour will never be in your control.

If your problem is that you have not yet written the book, however, then you can tweak the desired outcome to something that is in your control — namely finishing the book — and use this process to help you achieve that. This process stems from my own experience of behaviour change and I’ve distilled it down to eight steps that are simple in explanation but not always in execution.

Let’s begin.

Step 1. What is the objective truth?
